Paychex Sucks
1.) Some of Paychex representatives are not competent or do not care. I've seen instances where paychex failed to provide social security numbers for employees on Government filed reports. Getting a social security number is not hard to get for an employee and they should know better than to file payroll returns and W-2's with out this REQUIRED information. This lack of care leads to payroll tax notices the company receives and could lead to penalties. And it is hard to get paychex to handle payroll tax notices even if it is their screw up.
2.) Paychex 401k fees are high and absurd. I have 401k with them and they charged me almost 20% in fees on my contributions. They call the fee the "Mid-Atlantic Trustee Fee". Such a high fee is unexplainable and shows that they don't care about the end customer and only care about profit. If my employer didn't match my contribution I would need to earn >20% from my investments which is not plausible in most instances. Furthermore, no statements or account information I received from Paychex gives information on how this fee is calculated.
3.) Payroll Reports - Paychex payroll reporting sucks. They need a system where their reports can be export to .CSV or excel format (NOT txt or unicode) for easy file keeping and application into accounting systems.

Eric, Paychex's focus is on small biz and ADP on Large biz payrolls. Paychex only has about 3% of their clients with over 100 employees. They really don't have a fit anywhere because they are so far behind in technology. Sure payroll sucked and Paychex won't make it better.
ADP still doesn't understand the words, service. If you company is good, continue to focus on the value of service. I have been a small market sales rep with an Ohio payroll company for 5 years and I know the market. It is about service, price sometimes but service all the time.

TJ Hopefully you don't delete/edit this post so readers can get a true picture of what is really going on. I owned a small business that used ADP (Majors) and switched to Paycehx(58 employees/2 million annualized) for 5 years and sold it 5 years ago. I was so impressed with the MMS application I went to work for the company. I never had a tax issue, customer support was readily available and I was able to reduce my net payroll by roughly $32,000.00 (that number is less the Paychex fees) a year by using the serice. It was a true win/win.
Now, here is the analysis you have to do at your organization. How much is automation worth to you? You own a business and you will have to make tough decisions. Should you reduce head count by using an automated application? Can you reduce your time by using an application? What is your hourly rate? What is your employee's hourly rate that would be directly affected by the switch?
Here is the skinny on Paychex. If you are with Paychex and you want the best service go to the MMS division. They have more porducts to reduce soft costs than any competitor in the industry. You will get a seasoned payroll specialist which relates directly to better service. The cost is comperable.
Good luck to all.

We have had Paychex for several years now and it has been a disaster. I just found out because of poor instructions from their rep I do not have eyeglass coverage yet they still expect payment. These people are flipping crazy.

I just paid my final bill to Paychex after ending our relationship at the end of 2011 - $92.25 for preparing and mailing 3 W-2s for our company. This, of course, is over and above the basic monthly fee. This followed an automatic unauthorized withdrawal in excess of $900.00 to correct a calculation error on a tax form. Since we are obviously a very small business, a heads up on this with an explanation from our specialist would have been logical. I could go on and on about the amount of money we wasted with this company. My one warning is to not let Paychex have automatic withdrawal access to any bank account. I authorized non payment for any future withdrawal attempts. I do not trust this company.

Lost money because they did not submit my "complete" order and I did not check immediately the next day.
When I called them they blamed the error on "sometime that happens when you don't xfer future investments and current funds in the right order. (excuse the help out of me)
I have suspected them of executing buys at the "High" of the day and "sells" at the low of the day but then again I am suspicious of all brokers.(no prof)

I am complaining not about the employees, who obviously work hard, but on their policies. If you sign up for the HR/401k program which is around 3k (setup fees)and then decide to cancel, because come on folks we are human, they say your not entitled to a refund! Pretty hefty cancellation fee,and if your sm buz owner doesn't call them back they send you to collections. I find that a decision is more based on the fact that the sm buz owner switched PR companies, not that they didn't call them back. What do you think? When I call all I hear is the lack of communication? But when it comes down to it Paychex do the right thing!!!! Its wrong to keep even 2k as cancellation fees or set up fees, if the service is not being used. I read some of these posts, and it does seem that the upper management needs some education on customer service. You charge a reasonable fee not an over the top rip-off fee. How does that look to the next person checking out your HR/401k plan. Expect no refunds!!!

First, I would like to say that "Paychex, you have a dual responsibility, along with your client (the employer) to provide these reports to the IRS and SSa and other agencies as required by law. If the client has not given you the employees SSN, then you cannot file that report. If the client gets penalized for that, then you need but to send them a letter of absolution, explaining the missing information and let them know that if they do not get this info in on time, that PAYCHEX will not absorb the cost of the error on their part.
Second, you suck. I am reading the PAYCHEX employee posts in here, and I can tell you that, as the payroll manager of my company, a certified CPP (and previously and FPC) and a former CPA, you are incorrect in the assessment of your responsibilities to your client and the US Government. What's worse is that you seem very blaise about it.

I just heard that Paychex is beginning to charge surrender fees of $1,200 for anyone who leaves the 401(k) service. I wonder if they plan on applying that toward existing clients, or just the new ones...

Did you know that at Paychex if you are on our 401k product we hold the funds until the last possible moment to earn float instead of funding your employees accounts (costing them alot of money of time)?

I have been fighting with paychex for A WHOLE YEAR to get my 401k to roll over. A WHOLE YEAR. Every step of the way was some sort of clerical error on their part, then with previous employer, than back with them...a complete circle jerk. When I finally got my money, it was short $10k and they claimed I wasn't 100% vested even though all my paperwork said otherwise. They finally cut me a check after SIX MONTHS and it's $900 short. Their claim is that in that time, it was lost in the market - yet six months ago it wasn't even "my money" in the first place according to them, so they withheld. I am going to fight this, how are these people even able to operate??

Watsonvile, Alcoholic employees whose supposed academic credentials bear no resemblance to reality. These people have no morality in their personal lives and you expect them to give a damn about your business??
