Paychex Sucks
1.) Some of Paychex representatives are not competent or do not care. I've seen instances where paychex failed to provide social security numbers for employees on Government filed reports. Getting a social security number is not hard to get for an employee and they should know better than to file payroll returns and W-2's with out this REQUIRED information. This lack of care leads to payroll tax notices the company receives and could lead to penalties. And it is hard to get paychex to handle payroll tax notices even if it is their screw up.
2.) Paychex 401k fees are high and absurd. I have 401k with them and they charged me almost 20% in fees on my contributions. They call the fee the "Mid-Atlantic Trustee Fee". Such a high fee is unexplainable and shows that they don't care about the end customer and only care about profit. If my employer didn't match my contribution I would need to earn >20% from my investments which is not plausible in most instances. Furthermore, no statements or account information I received from Paychex gives information on how this fee is calculated.
3.) Payroll Reports - Paychex payroll reporting sucks. They need a system where their reports can be export to .CSV or excel format (NOT txt or unicode) for easy file keeping and application into accounting systems.

Having worked for Payx for nearly a decade I can assure you I have no love for them. I do have to say however, that much of the complaints here seem to be at least 50% the clients fault. The missing SSN thing? ABSOLUTELY the clients fault - turn it in when you hire the EE and there will be no problems. And, no, Mr CPA they don't review returns manually and "pass them to the guy in the office next door" before filing them. They have HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of returns to file every quarter - you can't possibly think that's a manual process can you?? If your client fails to turn in all their info that falls fully on them.
That being said Payroll Specs are severely overworked - always have been, always will be. Mistakes will happen when you're processing the volume they do.
All in all they're a good company from a customer perspective - I really do believe they most often try to do the right thing.
In short, I'm sure everyone is familiar with the phrase "Garbage In, Garbage Out".
*Disclaimer - Its been quite a few years since I've worked there but I doubt things have changed that much.

Well, It's Friday June 10, did everything right, did it on time no direct deposit in my account. No pay, no good. Bottom line, this is what people wait for, and if you can't get that right, why use the company?
Friday June 10, 2011 @ 06:59 PM
Anyone have any experience with Paychex's flexible spending accounts or their new "OneSource" platform?

Does anyone know why the new SVP of Sales resigned after just 10 days????

We have been using paychex payroll for a few years. It's all about your payroll rep; if you have a crappy rep you will get crappy payroll services. Our current payroll rep is great and everything goes smoothly.
Paychex 401k services is another beast entirely. We transferred our company's 401k to paychex and it has been an absolute fiasco. The paychex 401k sales rep was sweet as can be and said all the right things. But as soon as we were signed up the troubles began. Want to speak to someone at paychex that knows anything about your 401k plan? Good luck with that. The service is horrible; the fees are outrageous; and they can never get the 401k contributions right which is nothing but a bookkeeping headache.
Bottom line is if you value your time and want to run a productive business, don't even think about using paychex 401k services.

Are you kidding? this is my first year back after a few off. The "online" doesn't even show a complete claims history, and if you call the number you get a recitation of two, that's right, two claims at a time. You also cannot get a real person on the phone. I submitted a set of claims online and got a confirmation number and it does not show up at all--I am thinking bec I checked the "medical" box instead of the pharmacy box but I am not sure there was even such a choice online...the forms for fax/paper submission are different than online.
I submitted other claims and could not use the log in due to HIPAA computer requirements, on two different computers,(one is work and the other is home and my husband is a software developer and keeps my system updated) and could not open email attachments for the same reason. As a result I have a FSA credit card that is "suspended" for failure to submit verification documents for 45 days...but I got notice of my delinquency on this $5.00 claim on day 45.
I could go on, but given this is just my first 5 months, I'd say that's plenty trouble.

Paychex did not file our payroll taxes that they withheld from our checking account and we are now getting ien notices fromt eh goverment and no matter what we do they will not respond. We deal with Barbara Martinez and anyone who can help should call us at 516-794-9770 because Paychex DOES NOT return our calls.

After reading all these comments, and the continued bad experiences for 3 years, I can say one thing -- try a PEO! We went with ADP's TotalSource PEO and love it - no more problems or huge added/unexpected fees - I don't worry about my business and can concentrate on #1 - bringing in reveue. ADP actually saved me $ if you can believe that. Doubt I'll ever go back to regular payroll again and ADP has certainly earned my business.
Thursday June 23, 2011 @ 12:37 PM
A PEO Advocate .... So how much are you getting paid to pimp ADP? ADP is far from being perfect!

Paychex pays their employees like absolute crap!!!! DO NOT believe that top 100 places to work for crap. I have been there for over two years, and it has been the worst two years of my life.
They pay their employees barely above minimum wage. Most employees are doing the jobs of three employees. No one I know likes it there. They cut our benefits as well. It should make everyone sick to their stomach that many employees working here have to waitress, bartend, or do something else just make the rent or pay for groceries. Paychex employees are leaving like it's the mass exodus. Anyone under 35 is using this place a resume builder.
Do not work here!
Monday June 27, 2011 @ 06:18 PM
Bad pay? Cutting benefits?? They were just bragging about how well they are doing, they are sitting on billions in cash and are extremely profitable (over a 20% after tax profit)? They have also been increasing prices to their clients. What a great company!!!
Tuesday June 28, 2011 @ 06:34 AM
At least 5 people I work with HAVE to work a part time job just to get by. It's all well and good to work a part time job if you want extra money, but to do it out of necessity is crazy when you work for a company this big.
11.00-12.50 an hour is not enough to pay someone who is in a professional position........ The worst part is, they know the economy is bad and people are stuck there.

I am a very unhappy PayChex customer. We have been a client for 2 1/2 years and have had a steady flow of problems since the beginning. My list of disappoints with PayChex is very long. I am looking to replace them and would love to hear of your recommendations. Please do not suggest PrimePay or ADP, I am not a fan of them either. Thanks for your feedback. :-)
Tuesday June 28, 2011 @ 03:17 PM
Current Customer, if you tell me what state you are in and approximately how many employees you have, I can recommend a quality local company.
Friday July 1, 2011 @ 09:13 PM
One of the managers in the Portland office (Kyle) has been making appointments with local ADP reps (Richard?) while posing as a prospect. After wasting the time of the ADP rep, he brings back the information he has learned and proceeds to train the sales teams with the competitive information he gathered. Does not disclose he works for Paychex. Other managers know this is going on. How does this make for an ethical company?
Saturday July 2, 2011 @ 06:51 PM
They are not an ethical company to the people who actually WORK there. Unless you're a manger and up, you are treated like an assembly line worker. They also try to brain wash you that's it's such a great place to work. Ha, yea.
Tuesday July 5, 2011 @ 09:10 AM
How much does Paychex charge for 8 employees per week ? They quoted a friend of mine $45/week. I think that is low since i know other paychex clients at 82/ week. Thanks
Tuesday July 5, 2011 @ 12:03 PM
Be very careful, they use discounted prices up front then take away the discount after several months and the price goes up significantly. The sales reps who give out these quotes are very well aware of this but do not disclose it. Payroll Services are not the kind of service that you want to change every 6 months to get the latest promotional pricing (ADP will offer free payroll for 6 months for example). Once your prices go way up it is nearly impossible to get anyone to listen to you unless you leave the service.
Friday July 8, 2011 @ 12:15 PM
Realist: Thanks for your help. We are a small company in the San Francisco Bay Area with only two employees at this time. We will add employees again after the economy gets better.

SVP of Sales has resigned from company after 10 days in role.
