Paychex Sucks
1.) Some of Paychex representatives are not competent or do not care. I've seen instances where paychex failed to provide social security numbers for employees on Government filed reports. Getting a social security number is not hard to get for an employee and they should know better than to file payroll returns and W-2's with out this REQUIRED information. This lack of care leads to payroll tax notices the company receives and could lead to penalties. And it is hard to get paychex to handle payroll tax notices even if it is their screw up.
2.) Paychex 401k fees are high and absurd. I have 401k with them and they charged me almost 20% in fees on my contributions. They call the fee the "Mid-Atlantic Trustee Fee". Such a high fee is unexplainable and shows that they don't care about the end customer and only care about profit. If my employer didn't match my contribution I would need to earn >20% from my investments which is not plausible in most instances. Furthermore, no statements or account information I received from Paychex gives information on how this fee is calculated.
3.) Payroll Reports - Paychex payroll reporting sucks. They need a system where their reports can be export to .CSV or excel format (NOT txt or unicode) for easy file keeping and application into accounting systems.

The only way to save this company is for the upper management to take a real, long, hard look at how they treat their employees. If employees could just focus on their jobs instead of how they're going to pay their bills, many mistakes would not happen. Paychex needs a union for their rank and file employees!!!
Sunday July 10, 2011 @ 12:59 PM
"a union"? No offense but if you are so miserable quit! A union would be the end of Paychex, like it would most any company in this environment. If Paychex's competitors treat their employees better leave and go work for a better company. That is the only way to fix the situation. If you are not good enough to get hired at another company where you are treated and paid better then you should be grateful to have a job at all.

Employee of a company using Paychex. Yes they do suck! from a non-legal viewpoint our entire company was railroaded into transferring their existing 401k to "Wachovia LLC" maybe Wells Fargo???? I don't know I can't find my 100,000k bucks and am ready to sue! We were also railroaded into a health insurance plan that is so costly I have not seen the like... yes PAYCHEX SUX BIGTIME!

Update from my Monday March 28, 2011 [at] 04:23 PM Post- NOW the SOB's cut us off claiming they sent a letter on May 20th telling me I owed an additional 725 bucks or so.Get this- BECAUSE THE RATES WENT UP IN JANUARY! ALMOST 6 MONTHS LATER, they attempted to hammer me for it? YOU FILTHY SCUMBAGS.I called them furious, I demanded them show proof that a letter was sent, Was it Overnight, LIKE I DO WITH PAYMENT?..NOPE, Was it sent Certified mail? ...NOPE.the only thing the dirty hose bag would ask "IS you address 123 anywhere rd"? WHAT DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH YOU SCREWING UP? If I told them "the check"s in the mail, they'd shut me down faster then a 80 year old whore with crabs. I asked them to tell the employer what is going on, they refused to tell me who they speak to (But I know the COO) they told me the "Administrator said too bad, I am late paying it" I found out the Admin has been on Vacation. That creep lied!
I spoke to DOL in GA they say they get daily complaints about paychex. I can't say this enough..treat people right or ROT IN HELL

Paychex is REALLY, REALLY, REALLY bad. I recently received a letter from Social Security stating that they reported my 2010 total wages as $16,081 MORE than the W2 statement they issued to me. Turns out they submitted 2010 earnings to the IRS, SSA, and CA Franchise Tax Board using 22 months worth of salary instead of 12 months. So now SSA is claiming I have to repay them nearly $7000 in "excess benefits" due to my salary being reported as nearly double what I estimated to SSA for 2010. I'm collecting Social Security and still working part-time and so SS withholds $1 in payments for every $2 earned above the maximum which is currently $14,160 for people younger than full retirement age. Further, when I complained to my employer about the letter I got from SSA, they told her that "we wouldn't report something different than what was on the W2 we issued". After I went thru a year's worth of pay stubs to find when their screw-up occured, they admitted their mistake. Turns out the same error affected all workers at my company and now Paychex is whining about how much work it will take to correct!!!
Does anyone know if there is a govt agency I can file a complaint with about Paychex? I'd appreciate any info on that.
Wednesday July 13, 2011 @ 07:23 PM
Here's the thing Joan... Wouldn't it have been sooo much better if Paychex just say "Wow, so sorry! We'll get that fixed right away"??? It's their whole demeanor that ruins everything. Everyone, every company, is going to make errors. It's how you handle them that makes the difference. Sorry for what you are going through
Wednesday July 13, 2011 @ 09:07 PM
Yes, an apology or at least say..."we THINK our reporting was right, but we'll double-check". They basically told my boss that Social Security Administration was the one who made the mistake and then blew it off as MY problem to work out with Soc Sec. Not until I brought in the pay stubs as proof would they even acknowledge they made a mistake. They're still dragging their feet and not commiting to when it will be fixed, so I'm facing the prospect of my SS payments being cut off next month to collect the "excess payments". I was told that I may be able to file a complaint about them to the IRS, so will look into that option. Thanks for your sympathy :-)
Wednesday July 13, 2011 @ 09:08 PM
Joan, the real responsiblity falls with your employer not Paychex, your employer can go after Paychex but you need to deal with your employer, the returns are filed under their tax id and they are responsible.
Wednesday July 13, 2011 @ 10:09 PM
Tnank you, Realist. Unfortunately my employer is not being very forceful about the problem. It's a small church-connected preschool (22 employees) and management is not very sophisticated or proactive, which is kinda why I ended up doing research that the school should have demanded Paychex do. Looks like I may have to be the bad guy and really put the pressure on my boss. Sigh :-(

Everyone in our office has severe FSA issues with Paychex, the last person was initiated today. It's unanimous! The impression we have is that the FSA department was hired just off the street. No knowledge of FSA and no customer support skills.

Oh please. Ex-employee here..My comments directed to Galisano...
Friday July 15, 2011 @ 01:35 PM
I was pretty impressed with the full demo i just got from paychex until the regional sales manager trashed our current local payroll provider. he really misspoke and probably lost the sale.
Saturday July 16, 2011 @ 11:35 AM
They are a joke. If their clients knew how they actually treated their employees, the company would go under.
Monday July 18, 2011 @ 07:41 AM
Comments for Galisano to mull over.....Paychex was once the best place to work and do business with. BUT NOW it is the opposite, just like thousands of other companies, they no longer answer to clients or employees. It's Wallstreet they concentrate on all. So when you get that price increase every May...thank Wallstreet....or that new product they just implemented and was not ready for impimentation and it totally screws up your payroll for the year....thank Wallstreet. That's Paychex as a company, now I shall tell you about the Atlanta branch, God help them. Those poor reps are so overloaded in every way possible. They have no support as far as locally. The managers (supervisors) are encouraged to keep their hands out of payroll, and to refrain from customer problems. Those are rep responsibilities, and the sups should only concentrate on developing the reps. And the branch trainer...hired off the street to continuously train the reps, has no payroll experience himself!!! And when he attended the 2 week payroll school in Rochester, he failed!! Every new rep is sent to Rochester for 2 weeks of intense payroll and payroll tax training. We were warned that we would not have a job if we failed. He failed. And I hear he's not even training because he doesn't understand the material. Instead he is assisting the training provided by Sr. reps, so he can learn himself. And he has a few clients so he can obtain some rep experience. Are you one of the clients being handled by him as I post these comments to Golisano? Now let's talk about the clients. I had some 266 clients assigned to me at one time. My assigned clients were made up 80% of unhappy clients given to me to service and make happy again, which I was really good at for so many years. Unfortunately over the years, clients changed as well. They want every bang for the buck they can squeeze out. Which I can't blame them, but they have become very lazy as well. Used to all clients had a dedicated payroll person in their office that was trained by Paychex on how to communicate with their Paychex Rep. Most clients refuse any training now, they don't have time for that. And a decicated payroll person in their office...no way. The owners think they can run their business and their payroll affairs with Paychex as well. big mistake. Too much responsibility they are putting on themselves. The reps at Atlanta Paychex are not bad. They are all good in their own degree. I mean by degree..their service level. Some have been there for YEARS and others not so long. Atlanta management does not like older employees. They run them off as soon as they realize the reps can see through their bullcrap. They say old people can not adapt to change. Maybe that's why Golisano retired...he didn't want to change. So the next time you are on the phone with Paychex...remember, they don't like old people (anybody over 40) because you can't change and adapt, and your rep may or may not have passed payroll school...if you can hear him smile over the phone and he "reaches out" to you, then he probably didn't. And if you are speaking to a sup, don't take too much of their time, they will be in a hurry to get off the phone and cousel your personal rep because they had to take time out of their day to help the client and should not have had to. You people have no idea how crazy it is. In the immortal words of Nixon...they won't have me to kick around anymore. I was reminded daily how me and two more reps made more money than anyone in the office. It felt like they could not wait for me to make a mistake so they could get rid of me and hire someone at half of what i made to replace me. Good luck old comrades...I know 100% of you all hate your jobs, but just let me say this...the next time I hear one of you crying about it...I will tell you right quick, I don't want to hear about it. Instead do something about it. I did. As for you clients, if you want good service from a comapny, find one that does not answer to Wallstreet. That's what is wrong with everything now.

I have been selling for Paychex for 5 years and wish that my counterparts in operations would just shut-up and realize how lucky they are to have a job in the first place!!! If they are so good and hard working and it is so miserable here they should be able to get a better job for more pay. The fact is that most of them are white trash (if not they would be doing a real job, like selling) and they are very lucky that a great company like Paychex gives them a place to work. All of your constant complaining makes my job much more difficult, please keep it to yourselves.
Tuesday July 19, 2011 @ 08:00 AM
Honestly Paychex Loyalist please keep your mouth shut, put your knee pads back on, get back in my office and try to earn a referral. No one really cares what you think, except maybe your friends in the make believe world you call sales. Calling someone white trash is simply outstanding, what should I call you, a lair, a slime ball, a con artist and/or a sleaze-bag after seeing what some Paychex sales reps have told my clients in order to get their business? Have you neglected to realize this web site is called 'Paychex Sucks', if you are such a loyal sales rep why even read the site?
Tuesday July 19, 2011 @ 11:16 AM
You go CPA!!! You are a professional as myself...and we see through all that hype ... Loyalist, how young are you and how many tatoos and piercings do you have? This website is for truth telling about a service and a company that puts bottom line before everything else....go make your own website called "Sucked in to Paychex" and love being Mr Ben Dover.....
Tuesday July 19, 2011 @ 11:35 AM
Also Loyalist...you don't know who are talking to..white trash? Not hardly. I produced more referrals that you ever will...I did great work for my clients over the years that says a lot more for me than your lies ever will. Salesman..LOL,,,ya'll live off the reps ... they even have trainings for the reps to regocnize what clients are missing and might need, then send the client your name while you sit downstairs planning where all you sales reps will meet at 3:00 to eat, drink and be merry. Don't fool with me..I know what YOU ARE.

Realist: Thanks for your help. We are a small company in the San Francisco Bay Area with only two employees at this time. We will add employees again after the economy gets better.
