Paychex Sucks
1.) Some of Paychex representatives are not competent or do not care. I've seen instances where paychex failed to provide social security numbers for employees on Government filed reports. Getting a social security number is not hard to get for an employee and they should know better than to file payroll returns and W-2's with out this REQUIRED information. This lack of care leads to payroll tax notices the company receives and could lead to penalties. And it is hard to get paychex to handle payroll tax notices even if it is their screw up.
2.) Paychex 401k fees are high and absurd. I have 401k with them and they charged me almost 20% in fees on my contributions. They call the fee the "Mid-Atlantic Trustee Fee". Such a high fee is unexplainable and shows that they don't care about the end customer and only care about profit. If my employer didn't match my contribution I would need to earn >20% from my investments which is not plausible in most instances. Furthermore, no statements or account information I received from Paychex gives information on how this fee is calculated.
3.) Payroll Reports - Paychex payroll reporting sucks. They need a system where their reports can be export to .CSV or excel format (NOT txt or unicode) for easy file keeping and application into accounting systems.

AC - if Paychex is the recordkeeper for your 401k, you should be managing you account yourself. There is a website that Paychex recommends employees use IN LIEU of contacting them. It is on all of the 401k and FSA brochures. That feeds over automatically to Payroll, so maybe you should take a look at that if you don't think anyone else can do it right... http://benefits.paychex.com.
Yes, there are issues with Paychex. There are issues with ADP. There are issues with Insperity... PSP... etc. etc. This isn't unique to Paychex.

[at]Jen, I think Paychex wins the suck debate. Check out other payroll services twitters, and check out Paychex's. Nothing but apologies from paychex to complaints about them. Sad really

One of the biggest issues at Paychex is that there has been a major decline in leadership over the years and an obvious focus on only hiring what look to be "high schoolers" for leadership positions. These "kids" don't know how to lead their way out of a paper bag and the do more with less philosophy will only get them so far. They continue to thrive because of the client base they have but nobody talks about how their stock has been locked down at $29 per share for the last 4 years. Gee I wonder why. I have been a part of countless interviews where not only did I know I was the right person for the job but had to find out they hired a person with no experience. Why, because they were better? Hell, no. It was because they were intimidated by someone with experience that actually gives a damn and knows better how to run a department than most of the other lame brain managers that take up space in an office with a door and furniture and count numbers all day but do not actually know what their employees do. In fact, most managers will agree that they do not hire supervisors so their supervisors will know what their employees do. So the leader basically is a gym spotter to ensure the work gets done, almost like a glorified babysitter of the daily work. That is leadership? No, that is stupidity. Remember this, all empire type companies who think their crap dont stink and lack a vision will eventually come burning down to earth. Look at Kodak for example. I do not believe Paychex is exempt from this type of fate. And next time you are the interviewer, Mr/Ms. Manager at Paychex, do me a bit of courtesy and don't read your questions from a frickin script. Worthless pieces of sh*t. If only people truly knew how corrupt and dysfunctional this company really is. Oh well, now you know. lol.

As a small biz owner, with only 2 employees, I've had nothing but problems with Paychex processing payroll, filing & paying taxes correctly. The only thing they seem to get right is billing me. I closed my business 3 months ago but told I must continue to pay $55/month thru year end for them to process the W2's, which they completely screwed up last year and I had to pay my accountant to correct. They only give lip service and that is total BS. My most recent nightmare is that they filed the 2010 quarterly taxes but didn't pay them, which they fully admit to. They actually sent a letter stating they won't pay them and I need to work it out with the state myself. Instead, they applied the taxes they collected and billed me for to "other misc fees". I'm now facing huge fines and penalties from the state. I would NOT recommend Paychex to anyone. Their fees are outrageous and unacceptable for the level of service they provide. I will be filing a complaint with the BBB as well as my state Atty General. Maybe that will somehow make my misapplied tax money suddenly reappear. I recommend that everyone shop around, regardless of their sales pitch, other payroll providers do the exact same thing and have to be more reliable.

It is not just Paychex that is the issue. In today’s business environment employees of companies are asked to handle a larger work load. Companies are very reluctant for a host of reasons other than profits to maintain an adequate staff to address all the customer issues. Our education system is failing and most companies still have a difficult time hiring competent employees. The other reason is the unknown and questions like Will my business be alive next year?, Will the government decide to run me out of business?, Will my health costs triple and I can go on and on. Our economy and our society are in turmoil and there is no stability. If you were to Google any other payroll provider you would find the same comments that you are seeing in these comments. One comment from hundreds concerning ADP. “ADP gave me the WRONG amount on my W2 and failed to report $7,000 extra dollars on it. I just got a bill from the IRS for their mistake. They will not respond to a request for a copy of my W2 that they reported to the IRS. They are horrible and I am hoping that there is a class action law suit, because they seem to have screwed a lot of people.” as an example. Intuit could write a book called "How to Lose Friends and Alienate People." and the complaints are very similar to what you are reading.
I could go on and on but there is no need. Be responsible for yourself and read and make the best decision you can. There will be times that you make a mistake and choose the wrong path and stop blaming others for your mistakes and they will make enough on there on. Be honest with yourself shaking off the dust of your mistakes and keep moving forward. Quite blaming everybody else and look at yourself occasionally and stop going crazy when things screw up because they will.

Happy November! (Where has time gone?)
I'm Dana Kay Goddard and I work for a company called Extra Help, inc. We're based out of St. Louis, MO.
It has been interesting reading through the numerous comments, rants, and debates. I thought I would share my information with you.
MANY of our clients are small to mid-sized businesses who have been outsourcing their payroll to the
Big Boys" of the industry--"ADP" and "Paychex"
I'm not one to bash other companies. The numerous comments above state the obvious.
Our company specializes in small to mid-size businesses--we have 3 offices in the Midwest region and currently process payroll for companies in 32 STATES. We've been around 16+ years, recognized as the 17th Largest Woman-owned and operated business in the St. Louis area!
Each payroll client has a dedicated processor and sales representative. THE DIFFERENCE... we don't go anywhere. Our operations team has very little turnover. Many have been with Extra Help for 10+ years.
WHY CALL A 1-800 number when you can call your personal processor or representative on their cell phone?
If you or someone you knows is tired of being an account #, I encourage you to give us a call.
We offer true automated payroll. Whether you're wanting to fax in your hours, or use our Platinum Pay system (which has great reporting capabilities that CAN be exported as a .CVS or excel file) and is compatible with Quickbooks, Peachtree, as well as POS systems.

I am an employee of Paychex, reading these upsets me greatly. First of all I am sorry any of you had to go through any unecessary headaches. I don't know any of your individual situations to make a fair call on any of them. However, I do not think it is fair to bash an entire corporation based on one/a couple payroll specialist or one branch. There are many good people who work for this company who truly care and put a lot of time and energy into being a partner to their clients, who have no intention on "screwing you over" or whatever else has been said above. Things happen, but when they do I take full responsibility for anything that is my fault, even if it is one of my clients faults, I do everything I can to make the situation right . I understand the frustration of many of you, but I bet each and every one of you have had a customer, client, guest or whatever be unhappy with whatever your service is. Its just very disheartening to know that I work my butt off, and I care very much about my clients, and you are judging me and my work on a bad experience you had.

YES!!! The reporting function is horrible! I can list atleast 100 issues with Paychex and i've only been working with them for 3 months!

Outrageous that Paychex wants to charge me $65 to roll over my earned money to an IRA after cessation of employment. Isn't that in the style of B of A? Unacceptable!
Wednesday November 16, 2011 @ 09:55 AM
I would like to say that these allegations are false but I can't. Paychex has treated our company so poorly that it's criminal. After many unresolved calls to their 401K team I finally had to call their corporate office to get a simple matter resolved that any first day employee should have been able to handle. The biggest problem with Paychex is that their various departments e.g. Payroll, HR, 401K, TLO etc.; don't communicate with each other. Their customers get caught in the void. Sadly Paychex admits to knowing, this but they do nothing about it.

You people should check out a small but excellent company that really blows paychex out the wincow. Look up Payroll City in Colorado Springs, Colorado. These people know what their doing.

This company is terrible. Poor service. Lack of communication between the sales department and operations. No follow-through. You can do payeoll yourself and save yourself some money. For what you get which is a customer service nighmare their rates are too high.

I was looking for information about this company and I am really surprised there are really bad reviews. This is making me not apply there! I was wondering how much does a payroll specialist make an hour in the state of Florida? I would really appreciate the information; however after reading all these posts I think I may not even apply.

Working for a small independent retirment company, I am insulted at the lack of guidance from Paychex and thier Retirement side. We hand hold our clients through everything from filing thier Form 5500 to running thier compliance. I cringe any time I hear of a Paychex sales man coming in to see a client as I know they are sold a dream, and will lose all the customer care and expertise we have provided. We have taken many retirement plans away from Paychex and even dealing with them on that level is a horrible expereince. They have very little credibility in the retirement community. If anyone conciders using them please consult with a local retirement consulting firm as you would be in much better hands and often find the fees will be lower (paychex hides thier fees).

Interesting that the ex employee of Paychex misspelled the word "misspell" but writing "mispelled". Further, he/she wrote "their" out of context. The level of writing was poor, spelling incorrect, and I sincerely hope that this former Paychex employee left that company to enroll in some basic spelling or English courses!
Thursday December 8, 2011 @ 10:46 PM
Hey, the owner moved to Florida years ago. No state income tax there. A lotta' loot saved and I hear it's a bit warmer than Rochester, NY.
Friday October 21, 2011 @ 01:13 PM
I am pretty sure that most of the ex employees quit and are bitter about the poor management practices they had to endure that led to them quiting. The fact is that Paychex is a bad company as can be read about in the public records and judges rulings from numerous lawsuits. Forgetting all of the angy emotional comments, the facts tell the story about unethical leadership. If the 3 CEO's and 5 SVP's of Sales that have left in the past 2 years were just bitter non-performers who got fired then there are definately issues with hiring the right people.
