Paychex Sucks
1.) Some of Paychex representatives are not competent or do not care. I've seen instances where paychex failed to provide social security numbers for employees on Government filed reports. Getting a social security number is not hard to get for an employee and they should know better than to file payroll returns and W-2's with out this REQUIRED information. This lack of care leads to payroll tax notices the company receives and could lead to penalties. And it is hard to get paychex to handle payroll tax notices even if it is their screw up.
2.) Paychex 401k fees are high and absurd. I have 401k with them and they charged me almost 20% in fees on my contributions. They call the fee the "Mid-Atlantic Trustee Fee". Such a high fee is unexplainable and shows that they don't care about the end customer and only care about profit. If my employer didn't match my contribution I would need to earn >20% from my investments which is not plausible in most instances. Furthermore, no statements or account information I received from Paychex gives information on how this fee is calculated.
3.) Payroll Reports - Paychex payroll reporting sucks. They need a system where their reports can be export to .CSV or excel format (NOT txt or unicode) for easy file keeping and application into accounting systems.

TJ in response to your comment (shown below) its nice that you can do your best to make sure that no Client can possibly be at fault for something but the fact is that if we are not supplied a SSN by the CLIENT the best we can do is continue to ask for the number if we aren't supplied the number by Quarter or Year end then we are going to send out the paperwork with the missing number the reason for this is the fines are MUCH higher if we decide to not send the paperwork due to the fact we are missing the number.
But if all you want to do here is bash Paychex because you obviously don't have enough clients at your CPA firm. then by all means continue to bash the company your apparently working alongside.
"Once Paychex is hired by a client to complete payroll reports it becomes their responsibility to complete the reports fully and correctly. How hard is that to understand, Really? Being a great place to work has nothing to say about the service being offered."

I would like to have a key for reading the Paychex reports. They are not self-explanatory and do not show, for example, how much the employer contributes to each employee's taxes. I've looked online for some key or tutorial to Paychex reports and it's just not there. I don't have time to waste with a Rep and I have other people I need to cross train to read this thing.

I think I am dumber for reading all of these comments LOL. Current Paychex user. I actually think the company I work for isn't using Paychex to its full potential. I've seen that a lot with companies. I've used Ceridian/HR Payroll Web for 5+ years and there was so much cool stuff that could be done - just the employer never wanted to be bothered with learning the ins and outs and full range and capability of the software.
And Stephanie Brooks lol...perhaps you need a class on ER share of taxes. No key or legend is needed if you know where the numbers come from. No payroll report will spellout "this number comes from 7.65% of this number and 2.3% of this number"

...and yes...I meant dumber :P

I own a small business and my experience has been terrible. They continually mess up payroll and I keep getting delinquent tax notices from different government agencies. When I ask them to be resolved they incorrectly file paperwork (which then bounces back to me) or they don't respond. Changing companies very soon!

I used Paychex for my small business needs, switched to ADP and I couldn't be more happy. I am saving over $200 a month in payroll fees alone! I also use ADP for my workers comp, health insurance and 401k. Please, any business owner, CPA or Accountant.... Contact Melody, my ADP representative, it was the best decision I ever made as a business owner. Her email is Melody.Spoelstra[at]adp.com

My former husbands company uses paychex for their payroll. (Virginia Air) They pay on the 15th and the last day of the month. I do not get my child support for nearly 10 days after he gets paid. In this day of electronic transfers I find this reprehensible...someone is using my money for 10 days and I am sick of it. Once it reaches the ODCS it is placed in my account within a day or two. I was given a line of bull (from the nice HR guy at VA) that it takes 5-7 working days to clear the accounts??? and another 2 days with the child support people... WTH do they write a paper check? This is 2013 it should take 20 minutes...I am sooo tired of waiting for my support...I know a good tort lawyer...any one else have child support/alimony issues?
Monday November 25, 2013 @ 10:44 AM
It actually depends on the child support agency, not the payroll company. If the agency accepts funds transfer, the employer is responsible for getting that information to the payroll company, not the other way around.

I signed up, simple enough payroll, 3 household employees, too busy to do it myself, rep was very nice guy, I'm a gullible old lady I guess. Today is payday. Paychex delivered to the wrong address !! Ok, their delivery service's mistake, may be not directly Paychex then I read the checks and see that one employee's check is over $72,000 for the two week pay period !! I canceled immediately. The risk at this level of incompetency is too high. I'd be a fool to overlook these basic glaring errors of sheer incompetency !!

I have dealt with Paychex payroll and retirement services for the past five years. Payroll administration has been good. Retirement services is Horrible. Would never recommend Paychex to deal with your retirement funds for numerous reasons. However, just wait until you want to move funds....you will be dealing with dozens of different people who give conflicting info. Word to the wise...don't use Paychex for retirement funding!!!!

My Employer recently started using this service and it is the worst web site to try to log in to, 2nd only to healthcare.gov. My company loves it because it is cheap. Does not work well, does not matter, it's cheap. I had a lot of stock shares with this company in my portfolio and sold it. I had heard that it was a great company from my Raymond James account manager. guess I should move my money elsewhere. I believe that you get what you pay for. You want service ? It costs money. You want cheap you get cheap.

Paychex failed to provide my payroll quote within 3 days while all competitors had, when I notified Paychex I would no desire a quote, I got a million calls and text messages, stating "at this point we can be selective (discriminate) whom we provide payroll services for" and that I was being irrate for not being silent about being discriminated against.

We have worked with many payroll companies and Paychex is by far our favorite one. If there is ever a problem they always respond quickly. I wish I could edit the reports a little more but other than that we haven't had any issues. Never had anyone complain about child support or taxes or incorrect payroll, customer service or any of the issues I have read on here. Weird how so many people have had such horrible experiences with Paychex and we have had such a great experience. Maybe we got a good Implementation Specialist. :)

Paychex has destroyed my faith in payroll companies. I have 2 businesses and they managed to mess up payroll for months. They cost me so much in pissed off employees and time. They admit mistakes after weeks of arguing, promise to fix them, then repeat more mistakes. I'm so done with them. They paid my taxes late and the IRS is charging me huge fees when they had my money but sent it late! Furious with these idiots. Oh, and just to show, I had an accountant 2 years prior and never once had an employee over or underpaid.

Some of these comments like us not giving back the 401k maybe u should have ur ex ER notify paychex of that. Paychex is the clients record keeper not the employees service or supervisor. I work for paychex, and yes some things could be better, and you may find a few bad apples, but that is in any corporation. As for finding a job in paychex? Well there is a certain criteria they look for, and it always helps to know someone inside paychex. I started in a temp role, and have worked my way up the ladder. Also the fsa? I worked in that dept, and they have strict rules to follow. I approved claims all day long for the people who actually submitted correctly and used the expenses appropriately. To most of u complaining before u sign up for something always read the fine print. Otherwise when u get frustrated because paychex is just doing their job it falls on u. Do ur homework with ur money don't just get click happy! Sincerely a satisfied, and grateful paychex employee

Paychex sucks and like you have cost our company big time due to their screw-ups. The latest is that they changed our pay frequency in their system without any notification from us to do so, and as a result they filed our tax payment late and we are going to get hit with at least $1200 in IRS penalties. Of course their rep is saying that it is our fault, but we have provided them with all of our communications between us, them and the IRS and they somehow say we told them to change it. They are STUPID, DON'T USE PAYCHEX.

Rip off artists!!!

Come on, if the money was withheld from your check do you KNOW FOR A FACT that Paychex was the one responsible for sending the payment to the agency? Your employer is the one responsible for sending the payment to the agency unless he has the agreement with Paychex that they submit the payment to the agency on your behalf. Paychex is not your employer, they are a payroll processing company that your employer uses to process the payroll information that he/she is requesting.

We just started using Paychex and I am shocked at how bad it is. Why is there no feature to see 1 day and all employees in and out times? Its so backwards to click on each employee and scroll down to the day you want to change and then change and save and approve and then move to the next one. Rinse and repeat over and over again. There has to be a better way.

To Befuddled - Why did you hire a payroll company to process "no payroll"? Why don't you save yourself the money and process it yourself?
