'The Lottery' is a short story written by Shirley Jackson in the late 40s. Basically there is a "tradition" every year that they do in this small town that is supposily helps them have a good harvest. Long story short, somebody wins this 'Lottery' and is very upset about it winning it. You dont know what the lottery is all about exactly until the end, when in fact, the "lucky winner" is stoned to death. It's a meditation on following traditions for the sake of "its always been done like this." Sorry I gave the story away, but, the status kind of already did that for me :)
