America is not a democracy (that is majority rules and would require elections daily and would fluctuate wildley based on peoples emotions) The US is a representative Republic. The Supreme Court rules on what is legal, not what the majority approves of. The majority of US citizens were against interracial marriage, yet SCOTUS rules it unconstitutional. Also, there are just over 300 million US citizens, not 500 million.
