So, which parent is not needed, the mom or the dad? Moms bring characteristics unique to woman and dad bring unique characteristics to men. As long as there remain differences between men and women this will always be true. So, which one can a child do without?

Why do you just assume there are children? Many couples (gay and straight) choose not to have children.

If you're not going to raise a family then there is no need to get married. Marriage benefits exist to help families. Why help families? Because it keeps society strong and growing. If "couples" benefited society there would be legal benefits for them. This is common sense.
