Thanks goes to Monica Fornaro for sending in this scam.
In a subsequent email Susan Chambers had me order the MCAS kit and it turned out to be from Video Professor. It was ordered through the internet and I was charged $9.95, however when the kit came it was $198.99. I called their customer service and was told I had only 10 days to return or I would be charged the full amount. I immediately sent it back certified. I don't know how Adaptive Tech is connected with Video Professor, but this is definitely a scam. If this company wanted a certified employee they would test them during the interview, she says in the email that she will send a kit, but the next email she sends me has the link to Video Professor.
My guess is this scam is probably requiring new "hires" to purchase the "Video Professor" teaching software and profiting off the affiliate fee paid when somebody purchases the software. You will not get a job from this offer but an overpriced video professor kit.
Adaptive Tech Co may be a real company, however, this job offer is a definite scam. These scams often use real companies to try and appear real. Do not respond to any job emails from "Adaptive Tech Co" or "Susan Chambers".
If you received another job scam featuring another company please forward the email to

How do I spot a job scam?
- The message is for a position that you did not apply for
- The message is from or asking for a reply to an email address from a free email provider (ie: @aol.com, @yahoo.com, @gmail.com, @rocketmail.com)
- The position is for a work at home job. Let's get real here most of these positions are hard to come by.
- The message provides no phone and/or no mailing address
- You are "hired" for the position with no actual real life interview.
- The company does not have a website or the website was created in the last year. Do a whois lookup to see when a domain was created.
- The job list few or no qualifications
- The message is written with poor English
- A Google search for the company finds little or no history for the company
- The email fails to mention you by name. Starts off with generic opening (ie: Dear job seeker, Dear applicant).
- The work at home position involves receiving payments, money transfers, or check cashing.
What should I do if I provided my information to scammers?
- Do not respond to further communications.
- Do not cash any checks you received from fraudulent offer.
- Do not direct wire any money to addresses provided.
- If you sent bank Information: Call your bank immediately and tell them what happened. They should be able to change your account number or cancel your account.
- If you are still concerned you might want to enroll in credit monitoring such as LifeLock Identity Theft Prevention
- You can also file a claim with The Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). The Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) is a partnership between the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C), and the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA). They are probably overloaded with these types of claim though, so I would not expect an individual response. You can also contact the Better Business Bureau or your states attorney general's office
- Post a comment below with any information you have on this scam to inform other people to try and avoid any future victims. Post the email you received with exact wording if different from original posted so when people search for terms they find this warning.

Thanks for all the postings-I try to do all the scam checks I can before I apply for any job that is emailed to me. I put them on my spam and reject list.
Tuesday November 3, 2009 @ 04:24 PM
Add me to the list. Mine was from Tyler, TX and I thought it was awfully soon to get a response from yesterday's posting. I just started back into the workforce after owning and shutting down my own store. It's too early in my job search to be completely ticked off. Right now I can laugh or cry. I choose to laugh. But a few weeks from now, I'll be more than ready to hunt them down.

I just filled out the online application and set up a required account with Beyond Jobs. Am I going to have any issues due to this?
Wednesday November 4, 2009 @ 01:37 PM
I had the same problem, unfortunately I read this too late! The emails from Susan Chambers seem legit. They even created a website that says they are located in downtown Statesboro, which is where I live. I filled out the application and order the product. I completed the product (which, by the way, is a GREAT product. Video professor is WONDERFUL!), but was later charged $190 for what was supposed to be a free kit to earn my MCAS. Well, the kit does not earn you an MCAS, although it is informative. And, after completing the kit, the company would not respond to any of my emails. They are not real. Looking back, it all seems really obvious. It's an awful scam b/c umemployed people cannot afford $200!! You have to be very careful on Craig's List. It's not impossible though. My mom and I both got our current jobs from Craig's List. But it's not easy to find a real one.
If you already fell for the scam, you can still return the Video Professor for a full refund. You only have to pay shipping. I know, you've heard that before, but it's better than footing the $200 bill!

I received the email today and with hopes up replied as you all did. After trying to research the company after i went to the attached webistes, finding out they were scammers. Thank you for your posts. My hopes were up also, but I knew in my heart those hours and pay were too good to be true. I called the BBB and am going to call my local tv station that goes after people like this! ONe by one if we stick together, we will eliminate these ill gotten people.
Thank you all for sharing.

I, too got the same Susan Chambers intial response, directing me to another link to complete information. Before doing so, I googled them, and found Adaptive Tech in Raleigh, NC (where I live), supposedly a web site company. If they are really scammers, we should all band together and report them to CraigsList and get them kicked out. At least make life difficult for them until they come up with a new name. Good luck to everyone in your job search.

I responded to this ad on Craiglist and was surprised to even get a response. When I did get the response, I am so glad that I found all of you here. The money and hours listed sounded too good to be true so I thought I should check the company out. Thank You, Thank You for posting these comments. So disturbed by the way people can take advantage of others....
Friday November 6, 2009 @ 12:16 PM
I also was scammed by this same email. I was charge the 189.95 by Video Professor and now have to wait 3 weeks for a refund.... I am unemployed and dont have any income to speak of so I am royally screwed by this
Friday November 6, 2009 @ 02:45 PM
I just had applied for this through craigslist in Montana... They emailed with an interview offer, but first we need your credit report. They sent gullible me to a 'free credit' reporting site to get my own so as to not send personal info online. I fell for it and then that free credit report site asked for my bank account info with a note that there is a $1 refundable processing fee. I went through all this then they say the the app cannot be processed. That was the first I became suspicious... Now they have my number for my bank account and the one dollar has already been taken out. Just a dollar, right, but now what do I do to make sure they don't clean me out??
Friday November 6, 2009 @ 02:48 PM
They just sent me a second email, but now asking for a credit report. Do not send out your credit report to anyone. If a potential employer requires your credit report, they should pull it out without you giving any details. These scammers are horrible in putting our hopes up for a job.
Friday November 6, 2009 @ 03:35 PM
I got a similar scam email, except its asking me to do a credit report and has a redirect link. It looks quite legit, and has my name and all that. I thought it was legit, until I remembered I got a similar email about two weeks ago. The email is from susanchambers[at]apadtivetechco.com, which is some wordpress blog. I havent looked up the WHOIS info, but I will in a little and post it here. Here's the email...
Hello Jacob,
We have reviewed your application, and you have all the credentials and attributes to be able to fill the position. We will setup a meeting with you at the most readily available time, and will call you shortly. In addition, we have expanded your job description to also be a book keeper. We have just released our current one, as she was not responsible enough to keep payroll and was not organize. As a result, the position will be paying $18/hr for the added job description.
However, we do require for you to bring your credit report to the interview to qualify for the position. We will need a check from these three bureaus: Trans Union, Experian, and Equifax. We use a free and easy service where you can obtain this at:
http://adaptivetechco.com/credit-check/?mn=6891
We allow you to obtain your own credit report so your personal information is secured and your social security number isn't passed through email as we never know what could happen during the email transaction. Please just print the credit report, and bring it to the interview. Also we do required the credit report, since we know if you can manage your own money, you will be able to manage the company's money.
We here at Adaptive Tech Co. look forward to meeting and further discussing this position with you. Feel free to ask any questions.

I too fell for Ms. Chamber's initial email to my response to a craigslist ad for a Senior Executive Assistant. I filled out their form requesting former employers and followed the link to "Beyond.com". So glad I found your blog! What goes around comes around - yeah karma!
Saturday November 7, 2009 @ 02:43 PM
I just got that same email.....from a susan chambers. I filled out the app but now I know not to go any further! thx
Saturday November 7, 2009 @ 02:44 PM
I just posted my comment that I got the same email and the company said they were located in Columbia Tennessee!!!
Tuesday November 10, 2009 @ 11:45 AM
Am I in any danger ..... my identity or otherwise because I filled out the application before I realized there was not an actual "job".
Thursday November 12, 2009 @ 08:09 AM
I also had the same experience...EXCEPT, since I already am certified in Microsoft Applications from a college course, they directed me to get a credit report myself & bring it to the "interview". Also, doing a GOOGLE search, it seems they have a headquarters about 5 miles from me in Weirton, WV. But there is nothing when looking that company up in Yellow Pages.
Thursday November 12, 2009 @ 08:12 AM
By the way....my letter was the EXACT same one that Jacob who posted above received.
Friday November 13, 2009 @ 04:08 PM
I got the same letter they told me i was hired but this time they wanted me to go to a certain website to get my credit scores but i knew already it was a scam so i just stop everything and now i want everybody to know .
then like two seconds later they sent me this:
Hello Elida,
I regret to inform you that the position has just been filled. However, we do you have your application in file and can contact you when something comes up. Once again, I am sorry, and good luck in your job venture.

I just got that same email a few mins. ago. and because I found this website after receiving the first scam email I knew better not to send my credit report. and I replied back immediately saying this is a scam and do not call me or email me ever. and within literally 5 mins. i got another email from susan chambers stating she is sorry to inform me that the position was just filled!!!! ya right!!
Friday October 30, 2009 @ 12:03 PM
I also had the same correspondence. I canceled the order 5 minutes after I placed it and advised Video Professor to correct this since they are at fault as well with their online link only charging shipping up front. This is deceptive marketing and the 10 day time period is not just. I advised them this Susan Chambers is tarnishing their company name.
I also did more research and this supposed Susan Chambers is e-mailing from Dallas TX. The website is registered to a John White. I am about to track down other contact information so I can report this individual so that they may face fines and be shut down finally.
