I'm a CPA at a small 4 person public firm. The hours generally vary by firm. There are firms that work 7 day weeks and then firms that have very little overtime. Also consider that there also tons of jobs in accounting for private companies that would not require much overtime (ie: work for a municipality). For me my busy times are late February to April 15 and late August to October 15th but that is because we put most our clients on extension. During those times I work late nights (mostly between 7pm-9pm) and most Saturdays during busy time. We're all procrastinators here though and if we evened our work throughout the year we probably wouldn't need to work much overtime at all but instead we slack off during the off season with drinking in the bosses office or taking long office lunches, etc. However accounting is definitely not a 9-5 job. A client could call up anytime with a request (financial statement, tax issue, etc.) that that may need the next day that may require you to work late that day even if it is August and sunny outside, though I usually get out on time during the off season.
As far as education, I would recommend at least a Bachelor's in accounting if you are looking for a public accounting position. A masters may help you in with the big 4 accounting firms but it is really not necessary otherwise. Passing the CPA exam would be a great career boost and would advise taking if you can commit to the grueling studying.
As far as money my salary has more than tripled in the five years I've been working with an annual raise, 401k match, health, 3 weeks vacation, so no complaints here.
Edit: I just checked my time for 2008 and I worked 2340 hours in 2008 (includes paid holiday time and vacation time) which averages 45 hour/week.

Hi, just wondering if accounting is generally salaried or hourly and if the vacation is paid if it is paid at the hourly rate? Also, I read someone that posted being offered 50,000 to start. What would you say is the general starting rate for accountants and how long does it takes to make a substantial amount more?

RE: Ryan
Your questions are very location and job/company specific. There are no standards of how and what to pay an employee specific to the accounting industry. There are many positions available in the field of accounting. The best idea I can give you is to check your local job listings to get an idea for starting salary and part time/full time listings.

Hey TJ, I am very close to getting my BS in accounting (senior). Originally I was thinking I would get my MSA + take CPA exam before I really start working full time. Now I realized that taking the CPA exam alone could take 18 months (though I may be misinformed)plus the year to get my MSA. In general, would you reccomend I start working right after I get my bachelors while working towards my MSA + CPA?
Thanks

Thank you TJ for sharing your experience with us.
I will graduate for my bachelor degree this December 2012, I work in the banking industry and have no accounting experience. Since the requirements to become a CPA will change in January 2014, what would be your best advice to move quickly to become a CPA? Go for a master in accounting? A certification in Acc? Or just try to find an entry level job in accounting?
I’m also lost about the process. Is there any place where I can speak with someone about the extra classes I need or how they evaluate my degree?

I am a Junior in High School who is very much considering Accounting as a Major in College. I am currently in an Accounting class at my school, which is one of the things that pushed me to take Accounting as a Major. I read online that in order to take the CPA today you would need 155 College Credits. So would it be best if I go straight for my Master and then take the CPA. Thanks for any reply!

RE:
RE: Andre I have come across many accountants who enjoy it... just saying. Leaving it as vague as you did it is pretty easy to replace "Accounting" with almost any other profession out there.

Hi TJ:
I am currently taking Beckers CPA Exam prep course and I'm not sure what direction to take my career after I pass the exams or even with my current situation. I graduated in 2010 with my bachelors in Business Administration, Associates in Accounting. After graduation it took me almost a year to find a job before I got a job in the Accounting Department at a financial institution. Currently I work somewhere else doing Accounting for them but they are in the process of a merger and the work is very basic Accounting (so boring). I am not sure if I should wait to look for job until I am finished with my CPA or move to a CPA firm now. I'm a mother of a 2 year old and I don't meet the mold of a CPA firm employee because I am not a recent college grad. Im also not sure if a firm would be understanding when I miss work because my little one is sick or has doctors appointments. I am open to other options besides working at a firm but not sure if that will hurt me in future career advancements because I wont have that experience. What is your opinion on this?

RE: Isabella
A CPA firm might not be the job you want if you don't expect to work a lot of hours (. I'm sure you can find one where you it's a 9-5er everyday but that is very unlikely for that position. A lot of firms do have flexible hours so if you needed to break out early for a kids game then you can always make up the missed time later (maybe remotely at home). I think it would create a problem is if the work you are expected to get done is not getting done and others have to pick up the slack. I would be up front in the interview of how much you time you expect to be able to work so it's an understanding going in. It might take a little longer to find a position but if you are not honest and end up lacking in your performance compared to others in your same position it probably won't end well. We have several people at our office that have young kids and they are able to manage it very well and very rarely miss time so it does not create a problem.
I wouldn't wait to pass the CPA exam to look for a job ( dont see the point in that ) and I think being a recent grad is not the top selling point for finding a job with a CPA firm. I think if it is a job you are interested in stop making excuses and look!

Hello My name is Paula. I really love math and analytical stuffs (even tho im not that good at analysis but thats why we study) but I am wondering how the work environment for an accountant would be compared to a Nurse also the gradual raise in their salaries in at least 5 years.

My question specifically: Is being an accountant boring? Is it an everyday routine job? Is it challenging or not? Please email me for any update :) email : paulahazel1997[at]yahoo.com

RE: Paula - I do not email replies because that will not benefit this discussion any further... if you're interested enough you should read ALL the comments as your questions have been touched on already except for comparing a nurse to an accountant.... I can't really answer that it's like comparing apples to oranges though, I imagine.
